Travel with me

Join me on one of my upcoming group trips!

Group trips are so great for meeting new people, making new friends, and exploring popular destinations with like-minded solo travelers. Finding a group tour and tour guide to match your travel style and who makes sure everyone on the trip is having a good time is crucial.

I’m really grateful I found amazing tour companies that organize small group trips for solo travelers in their 20’s and 30’s. This post contains affiliate links. When you make a purchase I may get a small commission at no extra cost to you. Find out more here.

Intro to Indy Escapes, the travel company organizing the Kenya trip

Indy Escapes was founded by Lucas almost 10 years ago. He is an Australian traveler who already visited 120 countries and plans to see every single country. He still runs these group trips himself because he enjoys sharing some of his favorite destinations (Maldives, Kenya, Bali, Uganda, Croatia, Turkey) with new people every year.

Itinerary

Day 1: Nairobi

We commence our African experience after meeting your Indy Escapes crew at our hotel at 4pm for check in to your glamping tents. You will be given an introduction to the trip and what you can expect along the journey, along with being able to ask any questions that you have, then we will hit the road the next day!

We will spend the afternoon around the pool together, getting to know your new travel buddies. Then we will all have a freshly cooked buffet dinner onsite. In the evening we will spend some time around a paved and seated campfire to enjoy a relaxing night connecting with other guests, before starting our adventure tomorrow morning.

Day 2: Ruben

We hope that everyone is recharged after a lazy night around the pool and is ready to head to our first stop within Nairobi’s communities. After breakfast, we will arrive at the Ruben Centre, located in the Mukuru slum, and receive a guided orientation of the community project.

The Ruben Centre, with its three core areas of Education, Health and Community Development, is attempting to reconcile some of the hardships that the residents of Mukuru face. Today you will be exposed to all of the areas and see which one resonates the most with you, then you will spend more time there if you like. It may be the school, childcare centre, library, maternity ward, clinic, music or gymnasium.

We will also be completing various fundraisers to help support the Ruben Centre before our tour departs.

We will head back to camp after spending the day in the community where you will have the option of eating in or heading into town to try some local cuisine.

Day 3: Elephants, giraffes, and safari

After breakfast we have an optional excursion to the Giraffe Centre, David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust and Nairobi National Park, where you will get a taste of what is to come on a safari. Going with a local guide also means getting more insight into the city’s history and culture. We will have a couple of breaks along the day, then head to the Ole Serini Rooftop pool to watch the sunset over the Nairobi National Park. We will enjoy a nice relaxing evening up here with dinner and a couple of quiet drinks for those who want to lounge around and connect with their new friends.

There is still another big day coming up in the communities tomorrow, so this is a great opportunity to enjoy Nairobi before you roll your sleeves back!

Day 4: Kibera

Today is a special day and one that we have no doubt will find a place in your heart for a long time to come. After breakfast, we will arrive at the Edmund Rice Centre Nairobi (ERCN), located in the Kibera slum and spend the afternoon with the staff and families, and hear their stories.

Kibera is a dangerous place to live and there are many health related issues within the slum, and the most common diseases include malaria, typhoid, dysentery, tuberculosis and AIDS. The Kibera slum is the largest in Kenya and has an estimated population of over 500,000 to 1,000,000 people. We will have the opportunity to safely explore the slum and spend some time in the home of a local family from the ERCN.

After a humbling day, we will make our way back to our camp where we can get changed then head out for a well deserved dinner at our camp.

Day 5: Maasai Village

Today, we start making our way to one of the most well known and popular places in Africa! We will hit the road in our 4 x 4 safari jeeps and start making our way through the Rift Valley. We will stop at some amazing viewpoints and have lunch at our Glamping Campsite in the Maasai Mara.

After lunch we will head out to spend time in a local Maasai Village, and even have the opportunity to see inside their homes. We will also explore the local area with a local Maasai Warrior, where we will be able to shoot a bow and arrow, and learn about local flora and fauna. After the village visit, it is time to cool off at the resort pool before dinner. We recommend an early night because we have a big day coming up tomorrow on our Maasi Safari.

Day 6: Maasai Mara

We are up at the crack of dawn and have a big buffet breakfast before heading into the park as soon as the gates open. This will give us the best opportunity to see some of the animals hunting at dawn, plus it will also give us the chance to drive deeper into the less travelled areas of the park, like the Mara River – where the great migration takes place.

We will be searching for the BIG 5! Originally referred to the difficulty in hunting the lion, leopard, rhino, elephant and cape buffalo, we have the chance to try and spot all of them whilst in this section of the national park. If we are lucky we may even see a leopard, cheetah, hyena or crocodile.

We will arrive back at the campsite for dinner, then spend a night together around the campfire.

Day 7: Hot Air Balloon

Today, we hope that you will be able to tick a few more items off your bucket list! Those who would like to join, are able to head out on a once in a lifetime Hot Air Balloon Ride over the Maasai Mara. We will catch the sunrise whilst on the lookout for wildlife and enjoy a champagne breakfast. Others who would prefer a sleep in will meet the rest of the crew after breakfast.

We will say goodbye to our amazing glamping village after breakfast and continue to head north towards the lakes region, where we will be making our way towards our lodge in Nakuru. Our spectacular lodge is located inside the Nakuru National Park, which is an incredible experience in itself. We will spend the afternoon looking out over the surrounding landscape from the pool at our lodge, whilst trying to spot wildlife.

Day 8: Nakuru

After an early breakfast, we will depart the lodge with a packed picnic lunch and head to the Menengai Volcano Crater for a hike then make our way down to the spectacular caves that surround the area before heading back to our Lodge for a buffet lunch!

We will then proceed on a game drive in the Nakuru National Park where you will have a chance to visit a unique sanctuary catering for a number of the endangered rhinoceros and the Rothschild giraffe. Also to be seen is a myriad different variety of birdlife in and around the lake, including thousands upon thousands of flamingo. Waterbucks, lions and leopards are also common at the park, so we have no doubt that your cup will be full by the time we leave to head back to the lodge. We will have a campfire and drinks after dinner.

Day 9: Naivasha and Hell’s Gate National Park

Boom! Just like that we are on the last full day of our safari and have an action packed day before heading back to Nairobi. We will start early after breakfast and head straight to

Hells Gate National Park, where you will have the incredible opportunity to explore the park via bicycle. This is a rarity in Kenyan National Parks, and is only made possible due to the lack of large predators such as lions and cheetah. We will have lunch in the park and catch a glimpse of Fischer’s Tower. After spending some time at Hells Gate we continue heading toward

Lake Naivasha, where you will have the chance to explore the lake by boat and see the hippos that inhabit the area. During the boat ride you will also have the opportunity to go to the Crescent Island Nature Reserve, where you can explore the island by foot and get nice and close to wildlife such as zebras and giraffes before we pack up and start heading back to Nairobi for our final night together.

Day 10: Nairobi

Meet up for breakfast together with your new friends, reflecting over what just may have been the most fulfilling 10 days of your life travelling through Africa! Can it get any better?

After breakfast the Indy Escapes crew bids you farewell as you continue your adventures or return home.
