If you’re wondering where to stay in Chicago first time you visit, I’d keep things simple and stay in or near downtown.
Chicago is a big city, but most of the attractions you’re probably coming to see are concentrated around the Loop, River North, and the area along Michigan Avenue. Staying in one of these neighborhoods means you can walk to many of the main attractions instead of spending your entire trip on public transportation.
For a first visit, my top picks are River North, the Chicago Loop, and the Magnificent Mile/Gold Coast area. Each has a slightly different feel, so the right choice depends on whether you prioritize sightseeing, restaurants and nightlife, or a more upscale neighborhood.
Below, I’ll break down exactly where I’d stay in each area, plus a few hotels for different budgets so you don’t have to scroll through a list of 50 Chicago hotels. ✈️ Plan your Chicago trip
If you’re currently planning your trip, these are the easiest options to get started:
Where to Stay in Chicago First Time: At a Glance
| Area | Best for | My hotel picks |
|---|---|---|
| River North | Restaurants, nightlife, central location | citizenM Chicago Downtown, Pendry Chicago, Nobu Hotel Chicago |
| Chicago Loop | First-time sightseeing | Chicago Athletic Association, Homewood Suites, citizenM |
| Magnificent Mile & Gold Coast | Shopping, luxury, upscale stay | Park Hyatt Chicago, Pendry Chicago, Chicago Marriott Downtown |
My overall pick for a first visit: River North.
It’s central, lively, packed with restaurants, and within walking distance of the Chicago River, Millennium Park, Magnificent Mile, and plenty of other attractions.
1. River North: Best Area to Stay in Chicago First Time You Visit
If this is your first time in Chicago, River North is probably the easiest neighborhood to recommend.
You’re right in the middle of everything without being directly in the busiest part of the Loop. The Chicago River is just a short walk away, and you can easily walk south toward Millennium Park or north toward the Magnificent Mile.
River North is also one of the best places to stay if you care about restaurants and nightlife. There are tons of restaurants, cocktail bars, live music venues, and coffee shops, so you don’t have to travel across the city every evening.
It’s particularly convenient for first-time visitors because you can spend your days sightseeing and still have plenty to do once the sun goes down.

citizenM Chicago Downtown: Best for a modern hotel at a reasonable price
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ • 8.8/10 (3,323 reviews)
💲 Mid-range • 👉 Check current prices here
If you want a modern hotel with a prime location without paying luxury hotel prices, citizenM Chicago Downtown is a great choice.
The rooms are compact, but they’re designed very efficiently, with modern amenities and comfortable beds. This is the kind of hotel I’d choose if I know I’ll be out exploring Chicago all day and don’t need a huge room.
The location is the biggest selling point. You’re within walking distance of the Chicago River, Millennium Park, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Loop.
It’s a particularly good option for solo travelers or couples who want to spend their money on Chicago restaurants and experiences rather than a massive hotel room.
Best for: First-time visitors, couples, solo travelers and anyone who prioritizes location.
Pendry Chicago: Best for a historic building stay
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ • 8.6/10 (719 reviews)
💲 Mid-range • 👉 Check current prices here
If you want something more upscale, Pendry Chicago is one of my favorite choices in this part of the city.
The hotel is in a beautiful historic building, but the interiors have been updated with a contemporary design. You get the combination of historic Chicago architecture and modern amenities that makes the hotel feel special without being overly formal.
The rooms are stylish and comfortable, and the hotel has an on-site restaurant and bar.
The location is excellent too. You’re close to the Riverwalk, Michigan Avenue and Millennium Park, so you can walk to many of the best things to do.
Best for: Couples, design lovers and anyone looking for a luxury hotel with a central location.
Nobu Hotel Chicago: Best for a luxury boutique hotel
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ • 9.1/10 (384 reviews)
💲 Luxury • 👉 Check current prices here
Nobu Hotel Chicago is another excellent option if you want a more intimate luxury experience.
It’s technically in the West Loop rather than River North, but I’m including it because it’s one of the hotels I’d consider for a first visit if restaurants are high on your list.
The West Loop is one of the best neighborhoods in Chicago for food. Randolph Street, often called Restaurant Row, is packed with restaurants, bars and cafes.
The area has a slightly different atmosphere from the traditional downtown areas. It’s more trendy and restaurant-focused, with plenty of young professionals and a lively evening scene.
Best for: Foodies, couples and travelers who want a trendy neighborhood.
2. The Chicago Loop: Best for Sightseeing
The Chicago Loop is the most obvious choice if your priority is being close to the major attractions.
This is where you’ll find Millennium Park, the Art Institute of Chicago, Grant Park, the Chicago Cultural Center and the theater district.
The Loop is also very convenient if you want to explore other parts of Chicago using public transit. Several L train lines pass through the area, and Union Station is nearby if you’re arriving by train.
The only downside is that the Loop can feel much quieter after business hours. During the day it’s packed with people, but some parts can feel almost empty in the evening.
For a first visit, though, it’s hard to beat the convenience.

Chicago Athletic Association: Best for history and location
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ • 8.2/10 (222 reviews)
💲 Mid-range • 👉 Check current prices here
If you want to stay somewhere with a bit more personality than a standard chain hotel, the Chicago Athletic Association is a great choice.
It’s housed in a beautifully restored historic building directly across from Millennium Park.

That means you’re literally steps from one of the most popular attractions in Chicago. I stayed here when I was in town for work because you’re also close to some of the offices in The Loop.
The hotel has high ceilings, beautiful historic details and stylish public spaces, while still offering the modern amenities you’d expect from an upscale hotel.

The rooms are decorated with traces of the hotel’s athletic heritage. My room, for example, had a pommel horse used in men’s gymnastics. It was the only time I’ve seen something like this in a hotel room.
The location also puts you within walking distance of the Art Institute, Grant Park and the lakefront.
It also has an incredible rooftop bar called Cindy’s Rooftop. I loved the view from here. Check it out in the picture below.

Best for: First-time visitors who want character, history and an unbeatable location.
Homewood Suites: Best for longer stays and families
⭐️⭐️⭐️ • 8.4/10 (2,094 reviews)
💲 Budget • 👉 Check current prices here
If you’re staying in Chicago for several days or traveling with family, a hotel with more space can make a huge difference.
Homewood Suites is a good option because the rooms are designed more like apartments, with additional living space and kitchen facilities.
That can be especially useful for longer stays when you don’t want to eat every meal at a restaurant.
You’re also in a very central location, with easy access to the Loop and Chicago’s main attractions.
Best for: Families, longer stays and travelers who want more space.
3. Magnificent Mile & Gold Coast: Best for Shopping and Luxury
If your idea of a perfect Chicago trip involves shopping on Michigan Avenue, beautiful historic buildings and upscale restaurants, I’d look at the Magnificent Mile and Gold Coast.
Michigan Avenue is one of the city’s main shopping streets, with everything from major department stores to luxury brands.
You’re also close to the historic Water Tower, Oak Street Beach and the lakefront.
The Gold Coast feels more residential than the Loop, with beautiful historic homes and quieter streets. It’s a nice contrast to the skyscrapers and busy streets downtown.

Park Hyatt Chicago: Best for a Luxury Stay
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ • 9.2/10 (89 reviews)
💲 Luxury • 👉 Check current prices here
For a true luxury stay, Park Hyatt Chicago is one of the best choices in the area.
It’s just off Michigan Avenue, giving you easy access to the Magnificent Mile while still offering a quieter hotel environment.
The rooms are spacious and elegant, with floor-to-ceiling windows in some rooms and views across the city.
It’s also close to Oak Street Beach, so you can easily combine shopping with a walk along the shores of Lake Michigan.
Best for: Couples, luxury travelers and special occasions.
Chicago Marriott Downtown Magnificent Mile: Best for First-Time Visitors
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ • 8.3/10 (368 reviews)
💲 Mid-range • 👉 Check current prices here
If you want to stay right in the middle of the action, this is a very convenient choice.
You’re directly on Michigan Avenue, so shopping is essentially outside your door.
The hotel is also within walking distance of the Chicago River, Navy Pier and many restaurants.
This is a good choice if you don’t want to spend much time figuring out transportation. You can walk to many attractions and use public transit for anything farther away.
Best for: First-time visitors, shoppers and travelers who want a central location.
Which Area Should You Choose?
If you’re still unsure where to stay in Chicago first time, here’s how I’d make the decision.
- River North if: you want the best combination of restaurants, nightlife, walkability and central location.
- Chicago Loop if: sightseeing is your top priority and you want to be close to Millennium Park, the Art Institute and Grant Park.
- Magnificent Mile/Gold Coast if: you want shopping, luxury hotels, beautiful historic architecture and easy access to the lakefront.
For most first-time visitors, I’d choose River North. You get easy access to the main attractions without feeling like you’re staying in a purely business district.
And if you’re visiting during the warmer months, being able to walk along the Chicago River, explore the lakefront and pop into restaurants and bars without constantly getting on public transit is a huge plus.
