On my recent trip to Singapore I went to a tea workshop since it’s a traditional activity you can only do in this part of the world. I loved my experience and I want to share everything you need to know about the tea appreciation workshop Singapore. This post contains affiliate links. What is a tea appreciation workshop?
A tea appreciation workshop is an activity where you can learn about the history of tea and also learn how to prepare tea the traditional Chinese way.

You spend about 1.5-2 hours at a traditional tea house. You start by learning about the different types of tea, then get introduced to the Chinese tea set, and then you brew lots of tea and enjoy it.
It’s an opportunity to slow down, live in the moment, and learn a skill you can use even after your trip.

Where can I attend a tea workshop in Singapore?
I attended the tea appreciation workshop at Yixing Xuan Teahouse, an authentic Chinese teahouse in Singapore’s Chinatown.
What I loved about it is that it’s a family owned business and all members of the family are involved in running the teahouse.
The father opened the teahouse years ago and now his 2 daughters are running these workshops and working in the store.

I could definitely feel that cozy, loving vibe that you can only get at a family-owned business when I was there.
I had a great time at the workshop even though I’m not a tea person. Learning about the different types of teas and how to brew a perfect cup was a lot of fun.

Ever since I got home I drink a cup of tea every night. I think they turned me into a tea enthusiast haha.
My experience at the workshop offered by Yixing Xuan Teahouse
The workshop started with a brief introduction followed by an overview of what we would do in the workshop.
First, we went over the history of tea. I learned so many fun facts here. I won’t spoil them for you. But I’ll tell you that you’ll even learn what tea is called tea in some parts of the world and chai in other parts of the world.

Then we went over the different kinds of tea leaves. Spoiler alert: all tea comes from the same plant! White tea, green tea, oolong tea and black tea all come from the same plant.
I didn’t know that much about tea before going to this workshop so I had no idea about this.
After all the theory we moved on to practice tea brewing. It turns out that in the Chinese culture brewing tea is basically an art form. And the teapots are so tiny!

But it’s not just about making the perfect cup, it’s about mindfulness as well since it takes more time to brew the tea the traditional way.
I loved the different taste profiles of the different teas. The leaves they used were high-quality.

It was probably the highest quality tea I’ve ever drank. I was even telling them how I never had tea that tasted like that.
It was a really fun experience. They also have little ceramic figurines like fish or frogs that spray water when you cover them with hot water. I felt like a kid playing with them.

FAQs about the tea workshop at Yixing Xuan Teahouse
How much does the workshop cost?
They have different packages for the tea workshop. Some include dim sum items, while some don’t. Depending on the package you choose it costs between 58 – 105 Singaporean dollars.

When is the workshop offered?
The workshop is offered every day since the teahouse is open every day. They require 2 people minimum to host a workshop. However, if you’re solo, you can contact them and they will most likely be able to accommodate you.
Where is the tea house located?
The tea house is located very close to the Maxwell hawker center in Chinatown. After the workshop you can go there to get some food. That’s what I did.
