I’ve been to Madrid and researched the best areas, so in this guide I’ll show you exactly where to stay depending on what you’re looking for, and give you one hotel recommendation for each area.

Best area for first-time visitors: Centro

If it’s your first time in Madrid, then Centro is the area I recommend.

That’s because you’ll be staying right in the heart of the city, within walking distance of major attractions like Puerta del Sol, Plaza Mayor, and the Royal Palace. And to hidden gems like buying cookies from nuns.

It makes everything feel incredibly easy. You can step outside your hotel and start exploring right away without worrying about transport.

Within Centro, I especially like Barrio de las Letras. It has that same central location, but feels a bit more charming and less chaotic than the areas right around Sol.

Yes, it’s busy and lively, but for a first visit, the convenience is absolutely worth it. This area works perfectly if you’re following a 3 to 5 day Madrid itinerary.

Hotel NH Palacio de Tepa Madrid

I stayed at NH Collection Madrid Palacio de Tepa and I would choose it again for a first visit.

The hotel is located in Barrio de las Letras, right in the city center but in a slightly quieter and more charming area compared to Sol.

You’re still within walking distance of major attractions like Plaza Mayor, the Royal Palace, and the Prado Museum, but without the constant crowds.

What I really liked about this location is how easy everything felt. You can walk pretty much everywhere, and at the same time, you’re surrounded by great restaurants and cafes.

It’s also just a short walk from Plaza Santa Ana, one of my favorite spots in Madrid for food and drinks. I had some great meals here, especially at places like Tapa Tapa and Taberna el Sur.

The hotel itself is set in a 19th-century palace, but the interiors are modern and comfortable. My room was clean, cozy, and a great place to come back to after a full day of exploring.

Service was excellent. I visited around my birthday, and they surprised me with brownies in my room, which was such a thoughtful touch.

If you want a central location that’s convenient but not overwhelming, this is the hotel I recommend.

Best area for luxury: Salamanca

If you’re looking for a more upscale stay in Madrid, Salamanca is the area I recommend.

This is the most elegant neighborhood in the city, known for its wide boulevards, high-end boutiques, and refined atmosphere. It feels very different from Centro. Less crowded, more polished, and overall more relaxed.

You won’t be right next to every major attraction, but you’re still close enough to reach them easily by foot or a short taxi ride. In return, you get a quieter and more comfortable experience.

I especially like Salamanca if you’re planning a slower-paced trip, enjoy shopping, or want a more luxurious base in Madrid.

If you want a true luxury experience in Madrid, Bless is the hotel I would choose in Salamanca.

The design is modern and stylish, but still feels warm and inviting. Rooms are spacious, beautifully decorated, and very comfortable, exactly what you want after a full day exploring the city.

The hotel also has a rooftop pool and terrace, which is a big plus, especially in the warmer months. It’s the kind of place where you can slow down, relax, and enjoy the experience, not just use it as a place to sleep.

The location is excellent within Salamanca, close to high-end shops, great restaurants, and quieter streets that make the area feel more exclusive.

If you want to treat yourself or you’re celebrating something special, this is a great choice.

Best area for nightlife: Malasaña

If you want to experience Madrid’s nightlife, Malasaña is the area I recommend.

This neighborhood has a more alternative, creative vibe, with lots of bars, small clubs, and places that stay open late. It feels younger and more energetic compared to other parts of the city.

What I like about Malasaña is that you don’t need to plan your night too much. You can just go out, walk around, and stop wherever looks good. There’s always something happening.

That said, it can get noisy, especially on weekends, so this area is best if you’re planning to go out and don’t mind the energy.

7 Islas Hotel

If you want to stay in Malasaña, 7 Islas is the hotel I would choose.

It’s a stylish boutique hotel with a modern design that fits perfectly with the vibe of the neighborhood. The rooms are comfortable, clean, and feel a bit more elevated than your typical mid-range stay.

The location is great. You’re right between Gran Vía and Malasaña, which means you can easily explore during the day and go out at night without needing transport.

Despite being in a lively area, the hotel itself feels calm, which makes a big difference when you want to rest.

If nightlife is part of your Madrid plans, this is a great base.

Best area for a local vibe: La Latina

If you want a more local and traditional side of Madrid, La Latina is the area I recommend.

This neighborhood feels more authentic and less polished than Salamanca or Centro. It’s known for its tapas bars, small streets, and laid-back atmosphere, especially in the evenings.

I really like this area if you enjoy food and want to experience Madrid at a slower pace. It’s the kind of place where you go out for a casual dinner and end up staying longer than planned.

It’s also close to the city center, so you can still walk to major attractions, but it feels a bit removed from the busiest tourist areas.
