The best day trips from Prague: 6 tours worth taking

Prague is one of the most beautiful cities in Europe, but if you have more than a few days in the Czech Republic, I highly recommend taking at least one day trip.

From fairytale castles and medieval towns to dramatic national parks and UNESCO World Heritage Sites, there are plenty of incredible places you can visit within a few hours of the Czech capital.

I personally took a day trip to Český Krumlov and loved it. It ended up being one of the highlights of my trip to Prague. The town looked like something straight out of a storybook and the guided tour made the experience much more enjoyable.

1. Český Krumlov (my favorite day trip from Prague)

If you only have time for one day trip from Prague, I recommend Český Krumlov.

This charming medieval town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most picturesque places in the Czech Republic.

The historic center is filled with colorful buildings, cobblestone streets, cafés, restaurants, and small shops.

The town is built around the same Vltava River that flows through Prague, which makes the scenery even more magical.

One of the highlights is the castle complex, which includes beautiful gardens and two resident bears that live in the castle moat.

I booked a small-group tour that used minivans with only seven passengers. Once we arrived, several small groups met up and explored the town together with a local guide.

Our guide, Andrej, was hilarious and shared a lot of interesting stories about the town’s history. The tour started at the top of the town and gradually worked downhill, which means you don’t have to climb endless stairs.

At the end, the driver picks everyone up from the parking lot at the bottom.

After the guided portion, we had free time to explore, have lunch, and wander around on our own. Since Český Krumlov is relatively small, I never felt rushed.

The only downside was that our driver wasn’t particularly talkative during the drive. However, the guide in Český Krumlov more than made up for it.

2. Kutna Hora and the Bone Church

Kutná Hora is one of the most popular day trips from Prague and one of the easiest ways to experience the rich history of the Czech Republic beyond the capital.

This UNESCO World Heritage Site was once the second most important city in the Kingdom of Bohemia thanks to its silver mines.

The main attraction for many visitors is the famous Sedlec Ossuary, also known as the Bone Church. Inside, you’ll find chandeliers, coats of arms, and decorations made from the bones of more than 40,000 people.

It sounds unusual, but it’s one of the most fascinating historical sites in Central Europe.

The tour also includes the stunning St. Barbara’s Church, a masterpiece of Gothic architecture that dominates the skyline of the town of Kutná Hora.

You’ll also have time to stroll through the old town, admire the historic buildings, and learn about the city’s silver-mining past, including visits related to the famous Czech Museum of Silver.

While it’s possible to visit by direct train from Prague’s main train station, having a professional guide adds a lot of context that you would otherwise miss.

3. Bohemian Switzerland National Park

If you’ve spent a few days surrounded by Prague’s historic buildings and want to experience nature, this is one of the best day trips from Prague.

Bohemian Switzerland National Park sits near the German border and is famous for dramatic sandstone formations, deep forests, rivers, and breathtaking viewpoints.

The highlight of the trip is the spectacular Pravčická Gate, the largest natural sandstone arch in Europe.

This full day trip also takes you into neighboring Saxon Switzerland in Germany, giving you the opportunity to visit two national parks in a single day.

Depending on the time of year and weather conditions, you’ll enjoy scenic hikes, river gorges, boat rides, and some of the most beautiful landscapes in Central Europe.

What makes this tour particularly appealing is that everything is organized for you, including transportation, park fees, and lunch. Instead of figuring out public transport connections and trail routes, you can simply enjoy the scenery.

The small group tour format also makes the experience feel much more personal than larger bus tours.

4. Karlovy Vary and Loket Castle

If you’re interested in famous spa towns, this is one of the most relaxing day tours you can take from Prague.

Karlovy Vary is the country’s most famous spa destination and has been welcoming international visitors for centuries. The city is known for its elegant colonnades, colorful architecture, thermal hot springs, and mineral water fountains.

As you walk through the town you’ll see visitors carrying traditional spa cups and sampling mineral water from different springs. Even if you’re not interested in spa treatments, the city itself is beautiful and worth visiting.

Karlovy Vary is also home to the prestigious Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, which attracts celebrities and filmmakers from around the world every summer.

The tour also includes a visit to Loket Castle, a medieval fortress dramatically perched on top of a hill overlooking a charming town. The castle feels straight out of a fairy tale and provides a nice contrast to the elegant atmosphere of Karlovy Vary.

5. Karlštejn Castle & Koněprusy Caves Tour

If you’re looking for a classic Czech castle experience, this might be the perfect place for an extra day outside Prague.

Karlštejn Castle is one of the most famous medieval castles in the country. It was founded in the 14th century by Charles IV, the Holy Roman Emperor and King of Bohemia.

The castle sits dramatically above the surrounding countryside and is one of the best-preserved medieval castles in Central Europe. Walking through its halls feels like stepping back into the Middle Ages.

What makes this organized tour unique is that it combines the castle with a visit to the nearby Koněprusy Caves, the largest cave system in the Czech Republic.

Inside you’ll see impressive limestone formations, underground chambers, and fascinating geological features created over millions of years.

The combination of history and nature makes this one of the most balanced and underrated day trips from Prague.

Since both sites are located outside major train routes, joining a guided tour is often the easiest way to visit them efficiently.

6. Dresden, Germany

If you’d like to add another country to your trip without changing hotels, Dresden is one of the best international day trips from Prague.

Located just across the German border, Dresden is often called the “Florence on the Elbe” thanks to its beautiful architecture, art collections, and rich history.

Although much of the city was destroyed during World War II, many of its most famous landmarks have been carefully reconstructed.

On this full-day tour, you’ll visit both Dresden and the famous Bastei Bridge, one of the most spectacular viewpoints in Saxon Switzerland National Park.

The day starts with a stop at Bastei, a dramatic sandstone rock formation that rises high above the Elbe River.

The views here are incredible and it’s one of the most photographed spots in the region. Walking across the historic stone bridge feels like stepping into a fantasy movie.

Afterward, you’ll continue to Dresden, where you’ll have time to explore the city’s historic center with a guide. Highlights include the Frauenkirche, the Semper Opera House, the Royal Palace, and the beautifully restored Old Town.

One of the things that makes this tour particularly appealing is the combination of nature and city sightseeing in a single day.

You get to experience both the stunning landscapes of Saxon Switzerland and one of Germany’s most beautiful cities without having to plan transportation yourself.

If you’ve already visited some of the Czech Republic’s smaller towns and castles, Dresden is an excellent choice for seeing a different side of Central Europe.

Choose Karlovy Vary and Loket if you prefer beautiful architecture and spa towns.

If you’d like to visit another country during your trip, Dresden is an excellent choice. You’ll get to explore one of Germany’s most beautiful cities while also seeing the spectacular Bastei Bridge and Saxon Switzerland region.

And if castles are your thing, Karlštejn Castle and Koněprusy Caves is hard to beat.
