The Foundry Hotel Athens: review of this luxury hotel

I visited Athens in December 2023 and I opted to stay at The Foundry Suites Athens Hotel. It’s one of the best places I’ve ever stayed at, so I wanted to share this review summary of the Foundry Hotel Athens because it’s a really special boutique hotel. This post contains affiliate links. The Foundry Suites is an urban boutique luxury hotel with just 12 hip suites. It has an industrial design and it is decorated in a mid-century modern vibe. There are no rooms, just apartments. They all come with a fully functional kitchen, so if you’re traveling with family this could be a great option.

The building that now houses the hotel is a former foundry, where typefaces were designed and distributed. It was originally built in 1930 and recently renovated and converted into this amazing boutique hotel.

Location of the Foundry Suites Athens

The hotel has a central location in the vibrant Psyri district. It is an 8 minutes walk from Monastiraki Square and about a 20 minutes walk to Syntagma Square, where you can experience the ceremonial changing of the guard in front of the Greek parliament.

You’ll be in the heart of Athens and you can walk to most classical landmarks, including the ancient Acropolis of Athens, the Ancient Agora of Athens, and the Temple of Olympian Zeus.

The Foundry Suites Hotel is also very close to Ermou Street, the most famous shopping street in central Athens. So you can also browse countless fashion boutiques and souvenir shops nearby. It’s a really great location in busy central Athens!

How to get to the hotel from Eleftherios Venizelos International Airport

Metro

Athens has good public transportation. The closest metro station to the hotel is Monastiraki. The trip will take about 50 minutes.

The important thing you need to know is that the metro station is located outside of the airport. After you pass customs and you get your luggage, follow the train signs in the airport. You’ll have to exit the airport, cross the street, and then you’ll be at the train station.

They have ticket vending machines. Select your desired language from the various options offered, then pick the ticket type you want (a one-way ticket), and pay with a credit card. Trains leave every 30 minutes, so you might have to wait a bit if you just missed a train. The Athens metro operates between 6:30am and 11:30pm. If your flight arrives during the night you’ll have to take a taxi to get to the hotel.

A one-way metro ticket costs 10 euros. If you’re traveling with 2-3 other people you should share a taxi since it will be the same cost as taking the metro. Plus, taking a car is a more convenient option.

Uber / Taxi

You can call a taxi through the Uber app. A ride from Athens international airport to the city center costs about 35-40 euros and it will take about 45 minutes. Alternatively you can also schedule a private transfer.

Room review at the Foundry Suites Athens

I stayed in suite A-0 and it reminded me of a loft in Brooklyn. It had an industrial design: funky, modern, and very welcoming. It had one master bedroom, a separate living room, a private bathroom, a kitchen, and a small patio. The rooms have high ceilings, so it creates the illusion of even more space.

I loved the decor. In the living room they had a record player and a piano. In the bedroom they had an old landline and some funky posters. It had all the hotel amenities you would expect from a luxury boutique hotel: air conditioning, high-quality toiletries and towels, free water.

The nightly price is much more affordable than other capital cities in Europe, but it is pretty expensive compared to other cheaper hotels in Athens. If you like luxury and you usually go for mid-budget hotels, I think The Foundry Suites Hotel in Athens is a great bang for your buck.

Since it’s a boutique hotel they tend to be pretty flexible with the check in time. I got there a bit earlier and the suite was ready, so they checked me in early. However, they are strict about the check-out time. If you know you need to leave later you will have to pay a late-checkout fee, which is half the room rate.

Breakfast at the Foundry Suites Athens

While they don’t have a restaurant on site, they will bring you breakfast from The Athenian Deli across the street every morning. The menu consists of classic continental breakfast items and some additional Greek specialties.

You can order eggs, omelets, cold cuts, cheese, Greek yogurt with all the fixings, spanakopita, cheese pie, fresh orange juice and coffee. It’s a pretty extensive menu and you can choose different options every day.

You will fill out a form at the hotel’s reception with everything you want to order for the next morning, and they will bring you everything in a basket either to your suite, or on the rooftop. It felt so cozy to get the breakfast delivered in this way, compared to the traditional breakfast buffet offered at the majority of hotels.

Service at the Foundry Suites Athens

The staff was so amazing. From the moment I got there I was greeted warmly, they offered me water, and they gave me a map with attractions around the hotel.

Once I checked in, I told them I was going out and they gave me an umbrella since it was drizzling outside and I didn’t bring one with me.

They recommended what I should order for breakfast and also recommended where to eat lunch and dinner in central Athens.

They delivered my breakfast every morning at the aligned time, and they were always so nice and cheery. It was a pleasure to wake up and interact with such positive people. It always made my morning.

At check out, when I told them I was planning on taking the subway to the airport they flagged that the metro that goes to the airport is scheduled only every 30 minutes and suggested I wait a few more minutes before heading to the station. Otherwise, I would have waited more than 20 minutes at the subway station.

I can’t say enough good things about the team working at the Foundry Suites Athens. They will go above and beyond to make sure their guests are having the best time. Greek culture is amazing, Greek hospitality is next level and this team is fabulous.

Rooftop terrace at the Foundry Suites Athens

The other unique thing about this hotel is the rooftop garden. If you take the elevator to the third floor you will get to a stunning rooftop picnic garden with over 30 different species of plants and trees. It has incredible panoramic views of the Acropolis. There are tables and chairs if you want to have a drink or eat your breakfast here.

During the summer months they have a rooftop bar open. They serve Neapolitan style pizza, cocktails, wine and beer from small Greek wineries and microbreweries starting in the afternoon. You could have dinner here or you can just get a cocktail to cap the night after a long day of exploring Athens.

I visited in December, so I couldn’t take advantage of this, but I can imagine it’s such a vibe to eat pizza and drink a cocktail on that terrace with Acropolis views.

I highly recommend this hotel when you visit Athens. It’s a special place and one of my favorite hotels I’ve ever stayed at.
